At our recent Holiday mini-photo-session day at the park, Keith and Kirsten came out to do not only their holiday family photo, but to capture just a few special maternity photos. We'll be doing more photos as Kirsten gets even more pregnant you can be certain!

Keith and Kirsten have worked with us as part of The Memory Journalists team now for 2 years - can you believe it? They were one of our wedding couples in 2006. And we've met other amazing wedding couples through them (you know I'm talking about you Ann-Marie/Mark and Tyler/Larissa).

When we started our mini session, Kirsten said "now I don't remember what to do". She's so full of it! She knows exactly how to create some great emotion and expressions.

Keith and Kirsten had just come from doing some baby registries so they were in the mood to take some maternity photos. And they brought along little lambie - an early gift from Natalie. He was perfect for our photo session.

I'm so happy for you both! I can't wait to do more photos in days and years to come.

But really....still no name?! :-)

Taking Better Photographs - Photo Tip Tuesday 41 - What is the best time of day?

Office News

Jennifer posted by Jennifer

I often tell people that the best time of day to take photographs is the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset. We photographers call this the glorious golden light. However, it's really a matter of how you use light throughout any hour of the day. You can review all our past Tuesday Photo Tips on the blog.

In this first example of the Perkins family, we met just this last Friday at 9 in the morning. The sun was much brighter than it would have been at that first hour after sunrise, but it's still not high noon sun. In this case, as you can see Nate at times had sunglasses on. For 'in action' family photos, I believe people should be themselves. Wearing sunglasses is perfectly acceptable.

In this next photo, Ann-Marie and Mark's wedding was mid-day. The sun was high in the sky and what we photographers would say is "pretty harsh". In this case, I made sure to put the sun behind Ann-Marie and Mark (as you can see a bit of hair light) and I adjusted my exposure for their faces. In cases such as this, it's a good idea if you're using a lens that has a hood to keep the sun from directly hitting the front of your lens.

At midday sun, we photographers often will look for what we call open shade rather than force people to squint in the harsh light.

Now sunset is my absolutely favorite time. While sunrise is good too, when the sun is setting, you have a bit longer to use up the disappearing light than when the sun is rising and becomes harsh. In this first photo example of sunset light, or rather dusk light in this case, I photographed Josh and Trista after the sun had already gone down.

With Nicole and Mike, the time of day was just at the hour before sunset. In this case I didn't even choose to put them in the sun, but rather use the glowey light as it bounced off the sides of the buildings creating this very light and airy feeling backdrop.

And in our last example, Michael and Donna were photographed just as the sun was going down. It helps of course that the sun beams were still hitting the trees in the background creating a very warm and fall backdrop.

Preparing for Your Wedding Photos - Tip 7 - ESession Locations

Hello faithful readers. If you have been following along lately you know that this is our 3rd installment on Engagement Session Details. If you missed our other Esession tips just click the link to view those posts.

Today's Wedding Photo Wednesday topic is Engagement Session Locations. This is a simple subject to cover. There is no secret formula or magic location that will make your Engagement Session photos better. The location of your shoot is completely personal and you should ask yourselves if there are any special places in your town that have meaning to you and your fiance. If so, ask your photographer if they are willing to shoot there. Chances are, they will be and they will be thrilled to have your input and to shoot your session at a spot that is special to you and your honey.

Ann-Marie and Mark are a super fun, playful couple. The play park they chose was a perfect fit for their personalities and we had a blast photographing them having fun and being themselves.

Engagement Session Locations

Stacy and Mark love to cook together. We did part of their shoot at their favorite local market and the other part we shot in their kitchen while they cooked a delicious meal with all these fresh ingredients.

Engagement Session Locations

Jessie and Brian chose their location as well. They had spotted this quiet little spot in the hills a while before and remembered it for their engagement shoot. The greenery and lighting was amazing!

Engagement Session Locations

It was so good, I had to share one more picture with you from their session. :o)

Engagement Session Locations

Again, we love our clients' input on the location of their engagement session. Any place that is special to them is fair game. We love making these sessions very personal and what better way to do that than by shooting somewhere special to our couples!

Of course we have some favorite locations with fabulous lighting and lovely elements for an engagement shoot which we are always ready to suggest if our clients don't have a personal preference.

Preparing for Your Wedding Photos - Tip 6 - Esession Props

Office News

Carie posted by Carie

This week's tip is about what to bring to an Engagement Session or Family Shoot. We love it when our clients bring props. We encourage it for a couple of reasons. First of all, it gives a little peak into who you are as a couple. The photos will not only commemorate you as a couple but also the things you like to do together or that were meaningful to you at that time in your lives and relationship. You can read our other Wedding Photo Wednesday Posts on our blog.

In the lovely, below photo you can see that Jessie and Brian (April 2009) were totally on board with bringing props to their shoot. They went all out with their retro-themed Engagement Session. From their adorable Volkswagon Beetle to the flower in Jessie's hair, there were plenty of props that represented their personalities and their theme. Of course, we ate it up and it has been a favorite of ours since.

Engagement Session Props

Secondly, props are fun and help you relax a bit when first starting the session.

We tell our clients to bring any props they feel fit their personalities! They can include such things as musical instruments, games, frisbees, soccer balls, magazines, books, favorite candy, etc. We suggest you ask yourselves "what do we like to do together" or "what has special meaning to us" and this will give you ideas! Nothing is too silly!!!

Ann-Marie and Mark (May 2009) had a lot of fun ideas. One of their props was the guitars from their Rockstar game that they love to play together. Too cute!

Engagement Session Props

Jillian and Morgan chose more simple props. They adore reading together so they brought a blanket, a picnic basket and some of their favorite books. It's amazing how well props work to relax you for your Engagement or Family Photo Shoot. Props can take some pressure off and make folks more comfortable more quickly for their shoot. Try it, you'll see!
