Stuck behind the train

Personal Musings

I was sitting in my car lost in thought as the arms of the train track made their ominous sound and flashing of warning. It made me think how often in life we feel stuck behind a train. I've felt that way quite a bit lately when it comes to our business and my life. We get so wrapped up in the day to day running of a business that we lose sight of actually moving forward - and more specifically planning those steps to move forward. It's just enough to keep up with what needs to be done now.

Of course if you've read some of the inspirational quotes I've shared recently you will see where my thought process has been. Rather than always focusing on what's urgent, learn to focus on what is really important. (Stephen Covey) I've been focused on what seems to be urgent for so long that I've not spent much time on what's important.

So with that said, I'm taking a few months off....well kind of. I marked off the months of March and April last year so that I wouldn't book any weddings. We are wedding free for the next two months. :-) We will be doing engagement date night sessions and other shoots as scheduled. But we are taking some time off to strategize and plan where we are taking The Memory Journalists and Dynamite Weddings this next year. We have some grand plans and honestly it will be nice to actually plan steps rather than just jump in head first and then fall into the normal routine of always "doing" urgent tasks.

I will also be doing a bit less extra work (aka freebie work) for the next few months. I often over commit myself because I like to help out when I'm asked. I'm sure Cory will be a happier husband with my new found ability to say "No, thank you".
