Okay everyone...THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT!!! We need your help!!
As some of you know The Memory Journalists are getting into the film (aka video) side of photography. We call it "motion" photography, vs still photography. We recently attended a Canon sponsored workshop in Portland where we each had to come up with a 30 second commercial for a Canon Powershot camera. There were several cities on the workshop tour with a total of 20 submissions. There are BIG things in it for the overall winner, AND we just made the top 5 cut - which were chosen internally by the company who taught the workshop, StillMotion Photo & Cinema.
Now it's open to the public to vote for their favorite commercial out of the top 5! We are asking that you vote for us.
Here's the details...Click on this link -
http://canoncaravan.stillmotionblog.com/submissions/
click on my name (jennifer - Portland)
and click the word "vote"
Ask you friends, spouses, co-workers, etc. to vote too! Vote today. Voting is only open until Sunday and your vote counts. Of course, please watch all 5 entries and vote for your favorite...but we hope it's ours!
Many people have commented to me that our wonderful model looks like a mini-Jennifer. Wearing pink, a hat, painted toe nails with polka dots. I guess I never thought of that as I scouted for our model but now I laugh as she does remind me of me. We were given about 4 hours to pick our script, storyboard our commercial, and then go shoot. We had a team of 4 people: a director (me), Camera A, and Camera B and our lighting person. I hand picked this beautiful little girl, a complete stranger, from a water park in Portland close by where our workshop was held. She was the best model EVER! |

Here is our commercial...you can also watch it on the link above.

Elizabeth and Claudio chose Wine and Roses as their wedding reception location. After Kelly and I did a bit of scouting around at Morris Chapel, we headed back to Wine and Roses, where Elizabeth and the girls were getting ready.
Wine and Roses is located at:
2505 W Turner Rd.
Lodi, California 95242 |

| We stopped along the way to photograph how full the grapes are right now. |

| Elizabeth was getting ready in the Spa at Wine and Roses. I think I need to go there for a day of pampering myself....anyone want to go with me? |

| Elizabeth had her dress made by Amy Kuschel of San Francisco. And it was perfect! I loved the lace and the simplicity and elegance of this gown. Elizabeth is such a classic girl - I like to compare her to the actresses of the day of such women as Audrey or Katharine Hepburn. All the girls wore pearls...so classic! But it goes deeper than just classic looks...Elizabeth is deep down classic. You can feel it in her soul. |

| The french blue and yellow were used throughout the day. The flowers had such texture. Great job by La Martine Floral. |

| Even the striped linens were classic, elegant and beautiful. |

As we returned from the Morris chapel ceremony, we spent a few short minutes on the grounds of Wine and Roses before the sun was completely gone.
Our journey back from Morris chapel has a special story...which deserves a blog post all by itself...so look for that post coming soon. |

| Mike Regan, of MR DJ Services, prepared a fabulous slideshow that had Claudio in stitches....even crying tears at one point that he was laughing so hard. |

| I loved hearing the words of wisdom and toasts. How many shirts did you really buy, Claudio, once you learned of Elizabeth's appreciation for those colors?! |

| Their first dance started off ordinarily enough...Claudio looking into Elizabeth's eyes...but before the crowd knew what happened... |

| Elizabeth and Claudio broke out into a salsa dance!!! It was awesome...so much fun! |

And the Indiana Jones themed garter removal was perfect for Claudio. Be sure to click the below image to begin your wedding day sneak peak slideshow.
We really had a blast of a day with you two...Congratulations! |

As wedding photographers we are often asked, "do I need to smile in my wedding photos?" This is a great question and of course one with several answers. All the good questions have no simple answer. Have you noticed this? Well, that is what we are here for...to answer ALL your wedding photography questions, no matter how tough.
The answer to the question, "Should I smile?" while multi-faceted, is not super complicated. Smiling in photos is great of course. Especially in wedding photos as you want to portray your wedded bliss. However, if you are not a smiley person, smiling like crazy in your wedding photos is not going to look natural and you will probably look uncomfortable in your wedding photos instead of happy.
I have several great examples for you. In the following storyboard, Mike and Sharon show both a straight-face look and a smiley look. Sharon and Mike (October 2010) are big smilers. Jen actually asked them not to smile in the first photo to see what they would do. Jen knew it would get a laugh out of them and the result was so fun. So sometimes you gotta ask for a straight face to get the big laughing photo. I love it! |

| If big smiles are not your thing, a soft smile can look soooo lovely. Like in this photo of Denice and Adam (October 2008). |

| Here's Adam with his soft smile again and also in this storyboard is John who chose a very soft smile for this super gorgeous wedding photo of him. Grooms often look great with a soft smile. They still hold their masculine persona while showing their happiness to be marrying the girl of their dreams. |

| The days of pointing your camera and asking folks to say "cheese!" are over. We elicit all kinds of reactions and looks from our clients to see what is best for them. We love the sultry effect you get with soft smiles. Like in this photo of Nicole and John (January 2010). Holy hotness!! |

| And, some people just look great either serious or smiling. In this storyboard of Noemi and Sam (October 2010) you see both looks on this lovely couple and both expressions look great! |

| Hope this helps you decide how much teeth to show on your big day! |

Taking Better Photographs - Photo Tip Tuesday Tip 8 - Symmetry |

We're going to continue down the path of composition in photos. Last week we talked about Horizon Lines. You can review our past Tuesday Tips on the blog. This week, we're going to talk about the use of symmetry.
Symmetry can have many meanings. We'll eventually talk about symmetry in relationship to album designs and scrap-booking. Sometimes you need to take into consideration where you will be hanging photos, or how you will want them displayed in an album as you are taking your photos. In this first example, I knew I wanted a close up of both Jason's and Brittany's rings. I came up with the idea to have each of them hold the opposite's ring, i.e. Jason' holding Brittany's ring and Brittany holding Jason's ring. The actual pose composition of each photo is different, but the concept is what is symmetrical. And then I placed both these images on opposing pages in an album. Jason and Brittany were married in September 2005. That's b.b. or before blogging so I can't link you to their entire wedding. :o) |

Symmetry can be taken more literally too. In this case withHiroko and Dan's (June 2010) engagement photo, having them stand on the front porch of the home in which they were to be married, with their arms raised to be about the same position, created near perfect symmetry.
|

| Here is an example of symmetry in a non-traditional sense. There is an even number of girls and guys on each side, but not merely lined up as a standard wedding party photo. But you still feel (and now see) the symmetry even if the photo feels more fun! This wedding party photo is from Shirley and Young's special day in September 2006 which was also b.b. |

And lastly, you can use symmetry with symmetry. Matching feet placement (with super fun shoes!) in between the faces of both Caitlin and Sean (June 2010), which also created a sense of symmetry.
Symmetry feels nice. Our eyes tend to be drawn towards it. It's a matter of finding ways to add symmetry to your photos! Have fun! |

| I had to get in on the Pet Pictures. My little chihuahua is a bit harder to shoot because he NEVER lays down!! But I did get a few that I fell in love with. He just loves this monkey we got at PETCO. It is just the right size for him. I think we need to go get a few more since he likes it so much. |

| I love the glare he is giving to me. He's thinkinh "Really? Another picture? UUUGH OK!" |
